Quantum information processing and metrology with trapped ions
The use of trapped atomic ions in the field of quantum information processing is briefly reviewed. We summarize the basic mechanisms required for logic gates and the use of the gates in demonstrating simple algorithms. We discuss the potential of trapped ions to reach fault-tolerant error levels in a large-scale system, and highlight some of the problems that will be faced in achieving this goa...
متن کاملQuantum error correction for metrology.
We propose and analyze a new approach based on quantum error correction (QEC) to improve quantum metrology in the presence of noise. We identify the conditions under which QEC allows one to improve the signal-to-noise ratio in quantum-limited measurements, and we demonstrate that it enables, in certain situations, Heisenberg-limited sensitivity. We discuss specific applications to nanoscale sen...
متن کاملQuantum Control, Quantum Information Processing, and Quantum-limited Metrology with Trapped Ions
We briefly discuss recent experiments on quantum information processing using trapped ions at NIST. A central theme of this work has been to increase our capabilities in terms of quantum computing protocols, but we have also applied the same concepts to improved metrology, particularly in the area of frequency standards and atomic clocks. Such work may eventually shed light on more fundamental ...
متن کاملAdvances in Quantum Metrology
In classical estimation theory, the central limit theorem implies that the statistical error in a measurement outcome can be reduced by an amount proportional to n by repeating the measures n times and then averaging. Using quantum effects, such as entanglement, it is often possible to do better, decreasing the error by an amount proportional to n. Quantum metrology is the study of those quantu...
متن کاملExponentially enhanced quantum metrology.
We show that when a suitable entanglement-generating unitary operator depending on a parameter is applied on N qubits in parallel, a precision of the order of 2(-N) in estimating the parameter may be achieved. This exponentially improves the precision achievable in classical and in quantum nonentangling strategies.
